Excelling in Upper Grades

Posted Date: 01/06/2023

To the Parents and Guardians of Taylor’s Crossing Public Charter School,

As we near the half way point of the school year, I thought it would be a great time to convey some vital information to our parents. One area that I would really like to focus on is publicizing and informing parents about what Taylor’s Crossing has to offer, especially to our students in the older grade levels (7th-12th grade). In my short time here, I see that we have a larger turnover in those grades than I would like and I don’t think it stems from anything other than lack of information. As a parent myself, I try to inform myself on facts to help guide decisions that are best for my child. I hope this information can help you make the best decisions for your family and student moving forward. I want to present facts to you about the classes and opportunities we offer to all our students starting in these grades.

1) 25% of our 21-22 graduating seniors not only received their high school diploma, but also graduated last year with an Associate’s Degree.

2) The upcoming graduating class will have close to 30% that will graduate with their Associate’s Degrees as well as their high school diplomas.

3) Numerous students in 21-22 attended CEI full or part time and the same is true for our 22-23 class.

4) A student graduated with a CNA license and found immediate employment in the nursing field.

5) Students can start enrolling in online classes to put them on track to graduate with an Associate’s Degree as early as the summer following the completion of 6th grade.

6) TCPCS students took over 500 college credits in 21-22 alone which is impressive considering the current size of our 7-12 grade classes.

7) Any academic core courses that can be taken at any school within our community can be taken at TCPCS.

8) The opportunity to participate in and enjoy the high school athletic experience is greater here than most other schools. You are not competing with 50-90 students to make a team that has only 12 spots.

9) Our college/career advisor personally meets with students and families on a regular basis to guide them along the way, whatever they choose, to ensure completion of graduation requirements.

10) Our teachers tutor, mentor and work with the students on an individual basis each and every day, which does not happen at larger schools.

11) Many of our teachers possess Masters Degrees, which increases their knowledge and understanding of teaching pedagogy and instruction.

12) Students have a greater opportunity to participate in student government, sports and service which can be a huge determining factor on college applications and resumes for acceptance.

13) If your student wishes to participate in a sport that we do not offer, they are able to participate in that sport with the school in which they reside, while still attending Taylor’s Crossing.

I wanted to share this information to all our parents so they know that there is absolutely no reason to leave Taylor’s Crossing if you’re interested in getting the best possible education for your child. Being a smaller school, we simply can’t offer everything other larger schools offer as electives, but academically speaking, I challenge you to find another school that can set students up to walk into college as a Sophomore or Junior like our school can. I also challenge you to find a school that guides their students to meet requirements like

our school does. It truly is a huge advantage to our students.

I have noticed that students and families leave, thinking the grass is greener elsewhere, when in reality we can provide everything your student needs to be successful academically, socially and emotionally here at Taylor’s Crossing. If we can maintain more of our students, we could potentially develop some stronger athletic teams that can compete with other schools our size and increase the activities of the school with a stronger student government. Our athletic coaching staff is incredible and truly tries to develop the athlete as a whole, which is something that cannot always be said about coaches. We are focused on increasing more opportunities, more classes and more outside activities to create the complete high school experience. We have and will continue to make great strides moving forward and we want you and your children to be a part of it.

In the two years I have been here, I get a sense that our elementary school parents do not quite know or understand the levels that we teach to in our 7-12 grades and my hope is that providing you these facts, you will see that Taylor’s Crossing will continue to grow and increase the preparation of our older students for their future. For me, it starts by maintaining our elementary students who have learned and been taught by our exceptional elementary teachers both academically and behaviorally. I encourage you to ask how we can assist your student to make plans to suit their individual needs. I really hope those families, who’ve had students leave in the past, consider looking at what our 7th -12th grade classes offer as your children prepare for their future.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me and we can set up an appointment to meet with our college and career advisor and myself.

Thank you for your time,
